Alcantara takes its name from the Arabic name for the river, which is still today crossed by a Roman bridge in excellent conditions.
After having crossed a part of Catania, the river flows into the sea at Giardini Naxos, another important touristic attraction. Giardini Naxos is one of the oldest Greek colony in Sicily, and its sea is still blue and uncontaminated.
Tindari, founded in the 396 B.C., is located atop a promontory dominating the Gulf of Patti. Here tourists may visit a sanctuary dedicated to the Black Madonna. The Marinello Natural Reserve is a sandy peninsula stretching out into the sea from the base of the promontory. Legend has it that the lagoons of the Reserve were formed by the tera of the Black Madonna.
Messina was founded in the VIII century. B.C. as an ancient Greek colony. its history, art, natural landscape, and folklore as well as its georgraphical position make it a natural portal to all of Sicily.
